MASONIC BANQUET FOR WARRENTON HIGH SCHOOL HONOR STUDENTS AND COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS FOR SENIORS

59TH W.H.S. HONOR STUDENT BANQUET AND COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Gateway Lodge No. 175 sponsors the Warrenton High School Honor Student Banquet each year. The lodge has the distinction of being the first Masonic Lodge in Oregon to hold a High School Honor Student Banquet.

In 2010, the lodge held the 50th Anniversary of this event, which was begun by Brother Ervin Lee Atkins, Sr. Mr. Atkins was the Warrenton High School Wood Shop and Mechanical Drawing instructor from 1954 - 1963. He got the idea in 1960, of holding a Honor Student Banquet sponsored by members of our lodge. Mr. Atkins mentioned the idea to Worshipful Brother's John T. Carden, and Forrest Hensley and the three of them proposed the idea to the lodge brothers. The idea was adopted, and the first Honors Banquet was held at the Crab Pot Restaurant, near the High School in Warrenton Oregon in 1961.

The 59h WHS Honor Student Banquet was held on April 22nd, 2019 at 6:30 PM in the WHS Gymnasium. A Prime Rib dinner was be served. The cost was $12.00 per person. There were a total of 67 Honor Students along with their parents, and other relatives and Masons in attendance. There were (12) Freshmen, (18) Sophmores, (19) Juniors and (18) Seniors. Three Scholarships are given each year. The Edwin L. Mowick Award for $250.00, the Murl Peterson Award for $500.00 and the Emerson R. & Harriet Baldwin Award in various amounts, determined each year based on funds available. Warrenton High School Honor Students are escorted by their Masonic Sponsor to receive their Certificate of Achievement. Many Seniors receive a 4 year College Scholarship.

In 2019, $136,000.00 was awarded to past and present scholarship recipients. Once awarded, the scholarship is renewable each year for up to 4 years as long as grades are maintained with a 3.50 or better. The lodge plan's to continue this tradition well into the future.
